Gottman Method Couples Therapy

The Gottman Method is a research-based couples therapy framework that strengthens relationships by improving communication, deepening friendship and intimacy, and developing constructive approaches to conflict.

Research-Based (40+ Years) 12–24 sessions typical Developed by Dr. John and Dr. Julie Gottman

Quick Facts

Typical Duration 12–24 sessions
Best For Couples, communication, relationship distress
Session Format Couples (75–90 min)

The Gottman Method is one of the most extensively researched approaches to couples therapy, developed over 40 years of scientific study of what makes relationships succeed or fail. It focuses on three core areas: building friendship and intimacy, managing conflict, and creating shared meaning.

Gottman research identified specific communication patterns — criticism, contempt, defensiveness, and stonewalling (the "Four Horsemen") — that reliably predict relationship distress. Gottman Method therapy teaches couples to replace these patterns with skills that foster connection and repair.
