Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

EMDR is a structured, evidence-based therapy that helps the brain reprocess traumatic memories so they lose their emotional intensity — using bilateral stimulation to unlock the mind's natural healing capacity.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a powerful, evidence-based therapy for trauma and PTSD. Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR uses bilateral stimulation — typically guided eye movements — to help the brain process and integrate traumatic memories that have become "stuck."

When trauma happens, memories can be stored in a way that keeps the nervous system on high alert, causing intrusive thoughts, flashbacks, and intense emotional reactions. EMDR helps the brain move these memories to long-term storage, where they no longer trigger the same distress.

How It Works

The Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing process

  1. 1

    History & Treatment Planning

Gathering a thorough history and identifying target memories to address in treatment.

  2. 2

    Preparation

Building coping resources and establishing a safe therapeutic relationship before processing begins.

  3. 3

    Assessment

Identifying the specific image, belief, emotion, and body sensation associated with the target memory.

  4. 4

    Desensitization

Processing the target memory using bilateral stimulation until distress levels reduce significantly.

  5. 5

    Installation

Strengthening a positive belief to replace the negative cognition associated with the trauma.

  6. 6

    Body Scan

Checking for any remaining physical tension or discomfort related to the memory.

  7. 7

    Closure & Reevaluation

Ensuring stability at the end of each session and reviewing progress in subsequent sessions.
